A smart thermostat is one of the few tech purchases that literally pays for itself. The EPA estimates smart thermostats can save up to 8% on heating and cooling bills — which adds up to $50-$150/year depending on your home and climate. Over a 5-year period, a $200 thermostat is essentially free.

Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen)
Best for: Best smart thermostat that programs itself and learns your schedule
Rated 9.5/10 by our testing team
The 4th-gen Nest Learning Thermostat is a significant upgrade over its predecessor with a premium mirror finish display and more accurate learning algorithms. It observes your temperature adjustments for the first week and automatically creates a schedule — zero programming required. Home/Away Assist uses your phone's location to detect when you leave and adjusts temperature automatically.
After one week, it knew our schedule better than we did. We haven't manually adjusted it in 3 months.
Why we like it
- Programs itself in 1 week — zero scheduling needed
- Elegant mirror display looks beautiful on any wall
- Home/Away Assist saves energy automatically
- Works with Google Home, Alexa, and HomeKit
Flaws
- Most expensive thermostat in the lineup
- Requires Google or Apple account
- C-wire or adapter may be required

Google Nest Thermostat
Best for: Best affordable smart thermostat for Google Home users
Rated 9/10 by our testing team
The standard Nest Thermostat drops the auto-learning for a lower price, but it still delivers Eco Temperature mode (automatically switches to energy-saving temps when you're away), clean scheduling, and beautiful design. It regularly goes on sale under $80 and can be installed in under 30 minutes without an electrician. The best starting point for smart thermostat beginners.
Why we like it
- Clean, attractive design at affordable price
- Eco Temperature saves energy automatically
- Easy DIY installation — no C-wire in most homes
- Google Home integration is excellent
Flaws
- No auto-learning schedule (Nest Learning's advantage)
- Swipe interface less intuitive than touchscreen
- Limited compatibility with some HVAC systems

Amazon Smart Thermostat
Best for: Best dirt-cheap smart thermostat for Alexa users
Amazon's Smart Thermostat launched at a remarkable price point and frequently goes on sale even lower. It's a sensible choice if you're in the Amazon/Alexa ecosystem — Alexa voice control works reliably, scheduling is straightforward, and it qualifies for utility rebates in most states. It's not sophisticated, but for a second home, rental property, or basic smart home upgrade, it delivers.
Why we like it
- Best price of any smart thermostat
- Alexa integration is seamless
- Qualifies for utility company rebates
- Simple, accessible interface
Flaws
- Basic compared to Nest or Ecobee
- No learning capabilities
- Limited smart home integration beyond Alexa

Rated 9/10 by our testing team
The T9 is Honeywell's best-ever smart thermostat and a strong alternative to Ecobee for multi-room control. Resideo's Smart Room Sensors are well-priced and reliable, and the Focus feature lets you prioritize specific rooms at different times of day — bedroom at night, living room during the day. Works with all major platforms including HomeKit.
Why we like it
- Up to 20 room sensors for precise zoning
- Full smart home platform compatibility
- Focus Mode prioritizes room comfort
- Maintenance reminders for filter changes
Flaws
- Room sensors sold separately

- Thicker than competitors

Emerson Sensi is the choice when your HVAC system doesn't play nice with Nest or Ecobee. The Sensi Touch 2 has the broadest compatibility matrix in the industry, supporting complex systems like multi-stage heat/cool, dual fuel, and older HVAC configurations. It's also ENERGY STAR certified. HVAC professionals frequently recommend it for challenging installations.
Why we like it
- Broadest HVAC compatibility of any smart thermostat
- ENERGY STAR certified
- Works with all major voice assistants
- Clean 4" touchscreen interface
Flaws
- Simpler features than Nest or Ecobee

Wyze Thermostat
Best for: Best ultra-budget smart thermostat for DIY installers
Wyze built a 3.3" color touchscreen smart thermostat for under $60 — a feat that seemed impossible. It covers the basics: scheduling, geofencing for automatic away mode, energy history, and works with Alexa and Google Home. The Wyze app guides you through installation step-by-step with your wiring configuration. For renters, starter homes, or secondary properties, it's excellent value.
Why we like it
- Touchscreen display at budget price
- Guided installation in app is excellent
- Geofencing for automatic away mode
- Wyze ecosystem integration
Flaws
- Basic AI vs Nest or Ecobee
- Wyze app less polished than Nest

Johnson Controls GLAS
Best for: Most stunning-looking smart thermostat for design-conscious homeowners
The GLAS is the most beautiful thermostat ever made — a transparent OLED display that floats on your wall like a piece of modern art. It also measures indoor air quality including VOCs and CO2. While the software is dated and Cortana integration limited, it still functions reliably as a smart thermostat. For homeowners where the wall is a design statement, nothing comes close.
Why we like it
- Most beautiful thermostat design ever made
- Transparent OLED is truly stunning
- Indoor air quality monitoring
- Genuinely unique aesthetic
Flaws
- Cortana assistant is outdated
- Software updates are infrequent
- Limited smart home compatibility vs competitors

Mysa Smart Thermostat for Electric Baseboard
Best for: Best smart thermostat for homes with electric baseboard heating systems
Rated 9/10 by our testing team
Electric baseboard and in-floor heating systems don't work with standard smart thermostats — they use 120V/240V instead of 24V. Mysa fills this gap brilliantly with a polished thermostat that supports all major smart home platforms. If you have electric baseboard heating, Mysa is your only premium option and it's excellent.
Why we like it
- Only premium option for electric baseboard heating
- Full HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home support
- Polished app with energy reports
- Easy DIY installation with illustrated guide
Flaws
- Only useful for electric baseboard/fan coil systems
- More expensive than 24V alternatives
- Smaller ecosystem than Nest/Ecobee

BUYING GUIDE
Will a Smart Thermostat Work With Your HVAC System?
Before buying any smart thermostat, check if you have a C-wire (common wire) at your thermostat location. The Nest Learning Thermostat, Ecobee, and most smart thermostats need a C-wire for consistent power. Without it, they use a technique called power stealing that sometimes causes HVAC issues.
Nest includes a Nest Power Connector adapter for no-C-wire installations. Ecobee includes a Power Extender Kit. When in doubt, hire an HVAC tech for installation — most charge $50-100.

Smart Thermostat Energy Savings: What's Realistic?
The EPA estimates smart thermostats save $50-$150/year. Your actual savings depend on: - Current heating/cooling habits (do you already adjust manually?) - Climate and local energy rates - Home insulation quality - How well you use the features
The biggest savings come from Away mode (auto-setback when you leave) and consistent scheduling. Homes where occupants forget to adjust manually see the highest savings.
